“Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”  ~Lou Holtz

Everyone wants to lose weight quickly, but there is no magic pill that can make you thin in a month. However, there are several things you can do to increase your metabolism and jumpstart your weight loss.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

This is the most basic and easiest way to jumpstart your weight loss. Drinking a lot of water and detoxifying herbal teas will help flush all the harmful toxins from your body and boost your metabolism. Drink at least five glasses of pure, clean water every day.  Drinking a lot of water and herbal teas, especially first thing in the morning and before meals, will also curb your hunger and prevent you from binge eating.  Sometimes you feel hungry when you are really just thirsty so try drinking a glass of water before reaching for a snack.

Are you bored with plain old water?  Try adding some lemon, lime. orange, cucumber or mint to your water for added flavor and nutrients.  You can also add essential oils to your water (be sure they are high quality, safe for consumption first) to add tons of flavor and antioxidants.  Try lemon, lime. orange, peppermint, grapefruit or cinnamon essential oils in your water.  These additions will help strengthen your body’s detoxification systems.  Learn more about the internal use of essential oils with this free download.

Good Sleep

Get Enough Sleep

Your diet, your workout, and all the water that you consume will go to waste if you don’t get enough quality sleep. Good sleep helps to keep your hormones and your mood balanced. If your hormones and your mood are balanced, then your body will function more efficiently and will keep you from craving sugar and caffeine for energy. Make sure to give yourself a peaceful night of at least eight hours.

If you’re having trouble falling or staying asleep at night, go back to the basics and establish a routine (just like you do for your kids).  Aim to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day.  Establish a nighttime routine to help your body prepare for sleep.  That could be a hot bath, a good read, or any kind of relaxing activity you enjoy.  If you can, avoid screen time before bed.  Start diffusing relaxing essential oils at bedtime.  Try lavender, cedarwood, chamomile, orange, and vetiver essentials oils for a good night’s sleep.

Lemon Water

Drink Hot Lemon Water

Drinking hot lemon water early in the morning before breakfast helps fire up your metabolism.  It also supports detoxification.  The more junk you can get out of your body, the more smoothly all your systems are going to run.

Drink Healthy Shots

Another way you can fire up your metabolism is by having a healthy shot of lemon, honey, ginger, and turmeric first thing in the morning. It might taste disgusting, but it has a dramatic impact on your metabolism.

Hydrate Before You Workout

Drinking loads of water or green tea before a workout is an easy and efficient way to burn twice the amount of calories that you usually do.  Being well hydrated will give you more energy to power through your workout.

Learn to Love Cardio Exercises

Exercises that keep your heartbeat up are another way to burn a lot more calories and jumpstart your weight loss. You can add exercises like planks, burpees, and jumping jacks to get your heart pumping.  Just be sure you are doing something you enjoy.  If you don’t enjoy your workout, it will create stress.  Stress lowers your metabolism.  Find a way to get your heart pumping and have fun doing it.

Embrace Fidgeting

Some studies have shown that people who have a habit of fidgeting or bouncing their knees can burn up to 500 more calories a day.  Maybe we should rethink scolding our kids for fidgeting so much.  They just do what comes naturally to them.  Let’s learn a lesson from them this time.

Spice Up Your Food

Spicy food burns more calories during digestion because it can fire up your metabolism. Add a few more spicy foods, like hot peppers, to your diet. You can add jalapeno to almost any dish you like. Spices also add a ton of flavor with little to no calories.  You can also add dried spices like red pepper flakes, chili seasoning, ginger, and turmeric to add flavor and nutrients to your meal while also increasing your metabolism.

Graze Throughout the Day

Another trick is to eat five or six small meals throughout the day instead of eating three large meals. If you keep eating small amounts, your body will be constantly functioning to break down that food into energy. Your body will learn to work more efficiently and will burn more calories.  You will also have more steady and balanced blood sugar levels throughout the day.  When your blood sugar levels spike and crash, you feel tired and crave sugar and caffeine to keep going.

Black Coffee for Weight Loss

Drink Black Coffee Once a Day

Drinking pure black coffee at least once a day will boost the rate at which your body burns calories.  Read Nine Ways to Turn America’s Favorite Beverage into a Superfood.

Use Essential Oils

Essential oils can be used to support detoxification and boost metabolism.  Try incorporating grapefruit, cinnamon, peppermint, lemon, and ginger essential oils into your daily routine to help boost your metabolism.

Losing weight is not meant to be an expeditious activity; your body does not function that way. These tips should be practiced along with a healthy diet and exercise for best results, but they may be able to give your body that little extra boost it needs to power into weight loss mode.

Great tips. Wow, who knew you could burn calories fidgeting? I tried apple cider vinegar but couldn’t get past the taste. ?

        • Shellie Lynn on August 9, 2019 at 2:33 pm

Who knew there was some benefit to fidgeting ?
It took me a long time, but I finally did get used to the taste of apple cider vinegar. I sometimes add a splash to grapefruit juice. Since grapefruit has such a strong taste, it can mask the ACV a little bit.

Love your tips! when starting a weight loss program I always try most of these tips. The only one I can’t do is getting a good night sleep. I’ve never been much of a sleeper. I will try oils, I haven’t tried any yet.

You’ve got some great advice here. I am trying REALLY hard to be more conscious of my water intake so that I can boost it for a number of different reasons.

    • Shellie Lynn on August 9, 2019 at 2:27 pm

Drinking water gets hard when we’re really busy or when we’re bored with water. I try to always keep a stainless steel water bottle with me at all times and I flavor my water with lemons, limes, and essential oils. You just have to find the strategy that works for you.
