Four Powerful Ways to Protect Yourself and Loved Ones From Cancer

I keep asking myself, “Why are you doing this?”.  Why, at my age, am I switching gears?  Health coaching, blogging, email newsletters, internet marketing… this is not what I had planned for my future.  I already have a career, a really good one.

I was really driven when I moved away from home to attend The Ohio State University.  I had a career path in mind, and I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.  I had to work really hard to get into the highly competitive field of Occupational Therapy.  I’m very grateful for the determination I had back then because I have a meaningful, purposeful and rewarding job.

So, why am I stepping out of my comfort zone to be a Health Coach?  Most people do not even know what a Health Coach is (that’s probably true of Occupational Therapy too)!  I am an introvert at heart, and I have a pretty strong resistance to computer technology.  Reaching out to people, learning how to blog and setting up an email newsletter isn’t entirely difficult, but it sure is for me!  So again, why?

This is why…



This is my Mom and sisters.  They are the most important women in the world to me.

I have been called to empower women to create massive change.

My Mom is fighting a calm, quiet and brave battle against leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer.

I recently read a statistic that 1 in 3 Americans will be diagnosed with some type of cancer sometime in their lifetime.  1 in 3!!!  How many people do you know?  How many have already suffered or might suffer in the future?  There is something terribly wrong with this!

We have the most sophisticated health care system in the world, yet we have the sickest and most chronically ill population.  We push vaccines on tiny, immature immune systems.  We have a prescription or over the counter drug for every single ailment, and when there is a side effect, we get another drug.  We have enormous hospitals filled to capacity with sick people, including pediatric cancer centers and neonatal intensive care units.  We have an epidemic of childhood obesity, autism and developmental disorders.

Something is wrong.

We are living in a face paced, over scheduled and over processed world.  We use toxic chemicals to sterilize our homes.  We use soaps, lotions, creams and makeup with harmful ingredients on our skin.  We eat food like substances created by scientists in a lab.  We take numerous medications created by pharmaceutical giants who have a vested interest in their bottom line.  We have lost our connection with Mother Nature, our consciousness and our innate ability to heal ourselves.

It’s not too late.  We, as women, have a powerful role in creating the massive change our world so desperately needs.  We are the caregivers, nurtures, health care workers and consumers.  It is up to us to reclaim the health and livelihood of our loved ones.

In no way do I mean to bring feelings of judgement to anyone suffering from a chronic illness, especially one as devastating as cancer.  Not all cancers are preventable and so many factors are beyond our control.  What I am asking is for each of us to take control of what we can.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference

Get Moving

  • Sitting is the new smoking.  Our sedentary lifestyles are killing us!
  • The lymphatic system plays a primary role in detoxification and requires movement to work properly.  When lymph isn’t moving freely throughout the body, the stagnation creates inflammation, acidity and toxicity which leads to cancer.
  • A strenuous work out at the gym is not required.  No pain, no gain does not apply here.  Just move your body.
  • A simple walk, jog, or swim can work wonders to get your lymph moving.
  • A gentle yoga practice with bending, twisting and stretching will help detoxify your organs and your lymphatic system will send the toxins on their way.
  • Rebounding, or jumping on a trampoline, is one of the best (and my personal favorite) ways to support your lymphatic system.

Dietary Changes

  • Eat a whole foods diet with an emphasis on plants.
  • Vegetables are especially powerful in cancer prevention.
  • Berries have strong anti-cancer properties.
  • Avoid processed foods as much as possible.
  • Eat organic when you can.
  • Drink lots of filtered spring water.
  • Limit sugar intake.
  • Avoid processed white sugar and corn syrup.  Use natural sweetness like honey, maple syrup and molasses instead.  Even natural sugars need to be used in moderation.
  • Cancer cells feed off sugar.  If you take away their food source, they will starve.

Avoid Toxic Chemicals

  •  Get to know and avoid the dirty dozen.
  • Consider organic to avoid harmful pesticides and genetically modified organisms.
  • Be mindful of what your are putting on your skin.  It is your largest organ and is highly permeable.  The unnatural chemicals and artificial fragrances are absorbed into your blood stream, creating inflammation and toxicity.
  • Be careful of hand sanitizers.  The chemicals are often more harmful and toxic to our bodies than the germs they are killing.  Good old fashioned soap and water is best.
  • Consider the strong fumes you smell when cleaning your house with ammonia, bleach and other strong cleaners.  You are inhaling those dangerous chemicals directly into your lungs.

Practice Gratitude

  • We all have busy and challenging lives.  Taking just a few moments a day to acknowledge what is going well can change your body chemistry.
  • Cancer cells thrive in inflamed and acidic conditions.  Mindfulness, gratitude and positive thinking decrease inflammation and acidity in the body.
  • Practice gratitude and make your body an unfriendly environment for cancer.

Change is never easy.  But with commitment and support, it can happen.  Start with just one small thing and stick with it.  See what happens and what other changes are inspired.
