Health Benefits of Gardening
We can’t talk about being outdoors in the spring without talking about gardening. Gardening provides so many physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health benefits.
Why You Should Consider Gardening
- You’ll eat more veggies. Homegrown veggies in organic soil are so much more nutritious and healthier for you than veggies that have been sprayed with industrial pesticides, picked before peak ripeness and shipped across the country.
- You’ll spend more time outdoors 🙂
- You’ll get a good workout.
- You’ll feel less stressed. Working with plants has numerous stress reducing and mental health benefits.
- You’ll get sick less often. The microbes in the dirt can boost your immune system.
- You’ll feel better about yourself. Gardening improves your self-esteem.
- You’ll be happier and less forgetful. Gardening improves your mental health and cognition.
After working in the garden, you are going to have some tired, sore and dirty hands. Soothe them with some natural soap. Commercially available anti-bacterial hand soaps are actually damaging to your skin and can disrupt your microbiome. Andrea from Pine Tree Farmhouse has a great recipe for a homemade, skin nourishing hand soap with peppermint and pine needles. Check out Exfoliating Gardeners Hand Soap.
Are you thinking about growing your own medicinal herb garden? Once again, we can’t ignore the numerous healing benefits provided by Mother Nature. I love being outside! It really is like therapy for me! If I’m stressed out, to the outdoors I must go!
It truly is therapy! I wish I could convince my kids to get outside more often. Too much technology enticing them to stay indoors 🙁
It’s so crazy that being outside not only has mental benefits, but physical ones as well! On this beautiful day I’m going to keep this post in mind and spend an extra few minutes outdoors 🙂
Enjoy the beautiful day ?
I love being outdoors unless it’s around allergy season and then I am always indoors. I am more of a summer person and not winter.
Check out some of the allergy tips in the post. I’m definitely more of a summer person too! It takes a lot to get me out in the cold, wet, dark winter.
