Six Natural and Safe Detox Methods

Is it Safe to do a Natural Detox?

Detox diets are increasingly popular which means you will find a lot of information about them – some of it misleading and some of it downright dangerous.

How can you know which detox methods are safe and effective? And how do you know if you even need to detox?

Mother Nature has perfectly designed your body with the ability to rid itself of toxins. Your liver, kidneys, gut, lymphatic system, and skin all work in perfect harmony to protect your body from harmful waste products from within and toxins from without. So, why would you even need to go on a detox diet?

Because in our modern society there are so many factors that can inhibit your body’s ability to self-regulate and cleanse. Some of them include:

  • Stress
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of proper hydration
  • An overabundance of toxins in our environment (in the air you breathe, your food, drinking water, household cleaners, and body care products to name a few).

There are several popular cleansing plans such as the red tea detox or green tea detox. The reality is that they don’t provide your body with the nutrients it requires and you can actually gain weight on those types of cleanses.

Allowing your body’s natural process to take place is an easy and safe way to detox.

Here are six ways to achieve a safe and natural detox which won’t break the bank or take a lot of time:

Eat Real Food

Eating real food means eating fresh, unprocessed food. Real food is readily available at all grocery stores and is affordable.

What are some natural detox foods?

  1. Fruits offer several benefits. They are high in nutrients, including beneficial antioxidants, and are easily digestible. Many of them contain a high concentration of water which keeps your body hydrated and assists in flushing out toxins.  Don’t shy away from fruits because of their sugar content.  The sugar in fruit is natural and easily processed by the body.  The sugars in fruit feed your brain cells.
  2. Citrus fruits (and their essential oils) are well-known detoxifiers. Oranges, grapefruit, limes, and lemons, are especially beneficial for your body when it’s struggling to flush out toxins. Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning helps cleanse the liver.
  3. Cruciferous vegetables contain a high concentration of sulfur. Asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, kale, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower are a fantastic part of a detox program because they help remove harmful chemicals from the body.
  4. Garlic is a powerful anti-inflammatory and contains antioxidants which some studies suggest can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It is on the top of the list of detox foods as it helps flush chemicals out of the liver.

Drink for Detoxification

And you probably thought drinking was for intoxication 😉  Of course, you don’t want to drink alcohol on a detox cleanse.  You already knew that, but just in case you didn’t and you need some natural hangover remedies, read this article.

What are some natural detox drinks?

Pure Clean Water

Clean water is a critical part of any detox program.  As your body starts to release toxins, you need lots of pure, clean water to help flush them out.  Most tap water has fluoride in it.  Fluoride is a known neuro-toxin, so you want to avoid drinking tap water all the time, and especially during a cleanse.  Bottled water isn’t a great option either.  For the best results, use a home water filter.

Green Juice

Juicing is a quick, effective way to support detoxification.  The nutrients in fresh juices are quickly absorbed and assimilated by the body.  They go right to the source and start the detoxification process.

Deep Breathing

Of course, you already breathe, but do you take long, deep breaths? Check yourself right now.  Are you hunched over your desk or looking down at your phone or tablet?  Are your shoulders up by your ears?  If so, you’re shallow breathing.  You’re not completely expanding your lungs and oxygenating your body. Deep breathing expands your lungs, increases oxygen levels, boosts your lymphatic system and begins the detox process.

Take a few minutes in the morning to run through a few small, deep and heavy breathing exercises. This will not only give you a boost in energy but will benefit your overall health.  You’ll bring more oxygen to your brain, giving you more focus and clarity for the day.

Dry Brush Your Skin

Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and it’s responsible for eliminating around 15% of the toxins in your body. This is why the skin is often referred to as a third kidney.

Dry brushing your skin gets rid of dead skin cells, opens up your pores, increases circulation and lymphatic flow, and releases toxins.  Brush your skin with a dry skin brush before showering for best results.  It’s invigorating and you won’t be disappointed.

To make your dry brushing even more effective, add some essential oils to your brush.  Essential oils can quickly and easily penetrate cell walls and eliminate toxins.  Eucalyptus is a great oil to use because it opens up your airways and makes you feel energized and invigorated.

Exercise

We can’t talk about anything health-related without mentioning exercise.  Exercise is a very effective way to relieve stress and anxiety, and it’s also one of the best ways to naturally start the detoxification process. It boosts all parts of your body by increasing circulation and lymphatic flow and helping vital vitamins and nutrients reach all the areas of your body.

Exercise helps to mobilize the toxins hidden deep in your cells.  Rebounding on a mini-trampoline is one of the best ways to do this.  That is unless you’ve had several babies and pee your pants when you jump 🙂

When you sweat during exercise, you release toxins through your skin.  Make sure you’re wiping your sweat away and shower after heavy exercise so you don’t reabsorb the toxins.

Use Essential Oils

Essential oils can be used to naturally support all of your detoxification organs and systems.

Essential oils that support the liver: basil, bergamot, clove, copaiba, cypress

Essential oils that support the lungs: cardamom, cedarwood, cinnamon, eucalyptus, lemon, lime

Essential oils that support the kidneys: cassia, cilantro, coriander, geranium, lemon, rosemary, thyme, fennel

Essential oils that support digestion: peppermint, cardamom, ginger, fennel, coriander

What is a Good Natural Detox Program?

A good program is one that provides your body with lots of clean, healthy nutrition while it gently releases stored up toxins.  You want to find a program with lots of healthy recipes that are easy to make, won’t break the bank, and uses ingredients that can be found in a regular grocery store.  You want a program that doesn’t require a ton of extra time, and the most important thing you need is support.  You need a program that provides on-going support during the detoxification period.  Your friends and family may or may not be supportive of your efforts.  You need to have a guide and be around like-minded people who are experiencing the same things you are.  A guide who is supporting you along the way and people who are willingly sharing tips and recipes.  When you have a personal guide and community support, you can’t fail.
